Senior NIS officer dies by suicide

A senior officer attached to the National Intelligence Service (NIS) has died by suicide.

Tom Adala, 54, was an Assistant Director at NIS. He allegedly took his life by shooting himself using a Glock 19 pistol at the servant's quarters of his Kirichwa Villas home in Kilimani, Nairobi.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo mourned Adala as a dedicated man in his job. “Mr. Adala was a wonderful friend to many and, until his demise, an Officer with the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

His death is a profound loss to the country,” wrote Omollo on his Facebook page.

According to a police report, he left behind a suicide note in his bedroom. His nephew Francis Oduor found the body and notified his relatives who then informed the police. The bullet went through the right side of the head and exited on the left side.

Oduor lived with Adala and he last saw him on June 3 at around 10pm when he bid him goodbye. The following day, Oduor found that Adala did not attend breakfast. At around 9am, Oduor decided to check up on Adala but did not find him in his room.

A search in the compound led to the discovery of Adala’s lifeless body in the servant's quarters.

The body was collected and taken to the Lee Funeral Home. At the scene, police recovered the weapon, a spent cartridge, and a magazine loaded with three rounds of ammunition. In his bedroom, another spare magazine loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition was found together with the note.
