Kenya will host the World Scouts Parliamentary Union (WSPU), Africa Assembly, 2023, from June 22 to 24 in Nyeri county.
The conference themed, "Empowering African parliamentarians and youth in climate change mitigation through scouting," is expected to attract more than 400 delegates drawn from Korea, South Sudan, Malawi, Burundi, Tunisia and Morocco.
Dagoreti South MP and WSPU Kenya President John Kiarie yesterday led the Korean delegation chaired by Gyu Back AHN, WSPU President, to pay a courtesy call on the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula who is the patron of the association ahead of the opening of the conference.
Gyu Back AHN expressed gratitude to the Speaker for the support he accorded the Kenyan delegation that attended the 10th General Assembly in Jeonju Korea in 2022.
He further appreciated the role played by Parliament and the government to strengthen the scouting agenda in the country saying Kenya and Korea share a cordial that has been strengthened by the scouting activities.
Gyu Back AHN urged the Speaker to continue supporting the association saying that hosting the WSPU 11th General Assembly required a lot of preparations and resources.
Kiarie assured the delegation that preparations for the WSPU Kenyan chapter were in top gear in readiness for the WSPU 11th General Assembly in Nairobi, in 2025.
The Speaker said Nyeri was a unique venue for the conference being the home of the founder movement.
"I visited Nyeri to check on the preparations of the WSPU Africa Assembly and met with the leadership of Nyeri. I, therefore, assure you of a great experience as Nyeri is the home of the founder of the scouts movement, Robert Baden - Powell," said Wetang'ula.
He further assured the delegation of his support for the activities of the association in Kenya and the globe.
The Korea delegation included Ambassador, H S Yeonghan Choi, Hye Sook Jeon, Korea Scout Parliamentary Association Vice-President & WSPU Consultant, Yong Tak Cho, Secretary General of WSPU, Hyuk Park, scout leader and interpreter.
The Kenyan delegation comprised of Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe, WSPU Africa Assembly Chair, Senator Tabitha Mutinda, WAPU Kenya 1st Vice President, Funyula MP Wilberfoce Ojiambo, WSPU Kenya and Kenya Scouts Liasion Chair, Poppins Misoi, WSPU Kenya Executive Director.
