Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has affirmed the Government's support to families of students from Friends School Mbihi Girls, Vihiga County, whose children survived a grisly road accident.

Machogu's statement comes a day after six girls from the school died following a road accident in Naivasha, as they were traveling to Nairobi for the April holidays.

In a statement dated April 19, the Ministry said it will ensure the survivors get the best medical attention for free.

The students were admitted to different hospitals under the Edu Afya health insurance scheme, which covers secondary school learners.

"The Ministry condoles with the families of the deceased and affirms its support to the families whose children survived. The Ministry will ensure that the best free medical treatment is offered to the hospitalised students," the CS noted.

In addition, the insurance cover will also cater to funeral expenses for the deceased students.

On April 18, 2023, the students were travelling to Nairobi in a matatu, as they proceeded to the end of the first term holidays.

The matatu was involved in a fatal accident in Naivasha, on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, killing six students.

Area Education and Health officials moved quickly to attend to the students who were injured before rushing them to Naivasha Sub-County hospital as arrangements were made to inform their next of kin.

Three injured students are in critical condition and are currently in the Intensive Care Unit at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
