Dr Asha Mohammed has resigned from her position as the Secretary General of Kenya Red Cross effective April 14.

In a statement by the Chairperson of the board Geoffrey Korir, Dr Mohammed left office due to personal reasons.

She will be replaced by her deputy Dr Ahmed Idris until the organization appoints her successor.

"Dr Asha will in the next few months support leadership transition as she hands over in acting capacity to the Deputy Secretary General Dr Ahmed Idris," reads the statement by Korir.

She was appointed Red Cross boss in January 2020 as the Covid-19 virus swept through the country and the world at large.

Before taking reigns at Red Cross, she held the positions of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services.

According to the statement, Dr Mohammed helped Kenya Red Cross live up to its commitment to being "always there" by responding to emergencies and supporting communities.

"The Board is grateful for her service, passion and commitment," reads the statement.

She has held different positions in the Ministry of Health and also served as the Provincial AIDS Control Coordinator for Nairobi National AIDS Control Council (NACC), a position she left in 2002 to join Kenya Red Cross.
