China Square resumes operations after talks between Govt and Chinese Community

The China Square located at the Unicity Mall along Thika Road, Nairobi, has resumed operations following fruitful talks between the government and the Chinese Community, a week after it was closed indefinitely.

In a statement, the Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce stated that they looked forward to equal and fair treatment to enable a conducive business environment.

"The Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce welcomes the good news on the resumption of operations of China Square this follows several engagements between the Kenya Government and the Chinese Community in Kenya to reach an amicable solution to the stalemate and cooperation," the statement issued on Monday read in part.

At the same time, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce has promised to continue fostering collaboration between the two countries to enable and promote investment for both traders.

"We appreciate Kenya's government support in allowing the Chinese Community to do business and contribute to Kenya's growth and development efforts through employment creation and contribution to Kenya's tax revenue," it added.

The Chinese retail store was closed on February 26 by Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria stating that the foreign investors has set an unhealthy competition for small scale traders in Kenya.
