Right from its creation in Berlin as Leopold's personal property, Congo remains a geopolitical perplexity. Its immense territorial size and natural wealth, estimated at more than $25 trillion, is of strategic interest to competing imperial powers.

This makes Congo contrived chaos as extra-continental exploiters seek to deny that wealth to each other. Since the chaos affects neighbours there have been many attempts in postcolonial times to rectify the state.
