Kenya receives Sh5.6 billion grant from Hungary

The Republic of Hungary has injected Sh5.6 billion into the economy to boost various sectors as the country recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic.

President Uhuru Kenyatta made the revelation yesterday when he received  President of the Republic of Hungary János Áder and First Lady Anita Herczegh at State House, Nairobi, yesterday.

Áder was accorded an elaborate State reception that included a Guard of Honour mounted by a detachment of the Kenya Air Force and a 21-Gun Salute.

Uhuru said the progressive framework between the two States would “grow our trade and investment as we recover from the disruptions occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic.”

Áder who is in the country for a four-day visit held talks with President Kenyatta and their respective delegations.

Kenya and Hungary signed four bilateral agreements for cooperation in the health, water, education, and diplomacy sectors.

Uhuru said Hungary would increase the capacity of scholarship programmes for Kenyan students annually from the current 100 to 200 opportunities in the new corporation plans.

Last year, Hungary announced the opportunities available to all students from certificate to PhD courses, and almost all fields of study in various universities in the country.

“I sincerely hope that by the time these people graduate in Hungary, you will have implemented all the projects we have discussed so that they can return and participate in the successful operations thereafter,” said Áder.

Upon completion, the students are expected to return back home to contribute to the national development in terms of deepening the scientific, economic, and cultural aspects with a global perspective in our development agenda.
