Juliana Cherera elected IEBC Vice-Chairperson

Juliana Whonge Cherera has been elected as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Vice-Chairperson.

In a notice on Wednesday, Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said Cherera was elected unanimously on Tuesday, September 14 in a meeting held at the electoral agency’s boardroom.

She will deputise Chebukati and eensure commissioners are fully facilitated to perform their duties at all times.

Cherera was among the four IEBC commissioners sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court premises in Nairobi on September 2.

The three other commissioners are Irene Cherop, Justus Abonyo, and Francis Wanderi.

During the interviews conducted in July, Cherera told panelists that she would prioritise the participation of minority groups during elections, if successful.

She stated that her key priority would be to ensure everyone is brought on board during the electioneering period.

The commissioners will serve a six-year term.

Cherera, Cherop, Abonyo and Wanderi filled positions that fell vacant after the resignations of Roselyn Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat and Connie Maina.
