Tim Wanyonyi: Gen-Z needs to see a responsible government

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has urged leaders to address the concerns of the Gen-Z movement.

At the Westlands Constituency Strategic Plan launch in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 23, Wanyonyi commended Gen-Z for advocating for a responsible and accountable government.

"These young people and Kenyans need services. They need to see a responsible government and leaders because we are not serving the people if we are not responsible,” he said.

Over the past month, Gen-Z has challenged the country’s issues in an unexpected revolt.

 Their push for change has impacted governance, leading to the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 and the dismissal of the Cabinet.

"The strength of Gen-Z’s activism shows that their voices cannot be ignored," said Wanyonyi.

The strategic plan, Wanyonyi noted, is designed to guide the constituency's development from 2023/24 to 2027/28 and supports Westlands' growth.

The event included awarding Uwezo Funds to 26 groups, National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) payments for 200 elderly individuals, and certificates for 120 youth who completed driving courses.

Wanyonyi described the strategic plan as the result of consultation and feedback from stakeholders, aligning with Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

The forums included education, security, business, youth representatives, community leaders, and the public.

The empowerment programme started in 2018, targets youth and the elderly with income-generating activities and ensures their health security.

"Youth groups receive funds through the Uwezo Fund to support their business activities every year," added Wanyonyi.

Antony Osozi, Chairman of Tushauriane Self-help Group in Kangemi, said, "This is our first time receiving Uwezo funds, amounting to Sh50,000. Our activity in plastic recycling follows the philosophies of recycling, reusing, and reducing, which has created employment for youth and women in our community."

Judy Becky Ayacko, a Westlands resident, said, "We appreciate the support from Tim Wanyonyi’s office. I have qualified and obtained my driving certificate today."
