Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga and two others have been freed on a Sh100,000 cash bail or Sh200,000 bond.

Makadara Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia delivered the ruling on Tuesday, July 25, after deferring it on Monday.

Njenga was charged at the Makadara Law Courts on Monday, alongside his brother Peter Njoroge and aide Felix Lakishe.

Kyambia said that it was the right of the accused to be released on bail arguing that the prosecution had not proven the claims that the three would interfere with witnesses.

They were arrested on Wednesday night July 19, at Kiserian, Kajiado County for allegedly being part of the organisers of anti-government demonstrations which were set to take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Nairobi and other parts of the country.

According to the prosecution, Njenga and his co-accused had the intent to commit a felony given the items found in their possession.

The prosecution said that during their arrest, they were found in possession of 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus, and three jembe sticks.

The case will be mentioned on September 18, 2023, and heard on December 4, 2023.
