Celebrated CID officer Richard Katola passes on at Kenyatta National Hospital

Kenya: A celebrated CID officer Richard Katola has died. Katola, who is a former elite unit, Head of Special Crimes Prevention Unit, died at the Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was seeking medical attention after suffering stroke.

He has been unwell for the last three years. He was one of the few celebrated CID detectives and participated in the Mungiki crackdown between 2007 and 2012.

He is also among members of the former Kwekwe squad, who have since died in mysterious circumstances in a row.

As the head of SCPU, he was technically the boss of Kwekwe, whose members were drawn from the unit.

His colleagues described him as a dedicated and hardworking man, who served police whole-heartedly. His body was moved to Chiromo Mortuary.

Senior officers at CID headquarters mourned his death, terming it a great loss to the police service.
