Twin sisters VALARIE AGIZA and RITA KAVULANI created their accessories brand, VaRie. They narrate their journey into business to SILAS NYAMWEYA.
Tell us more about your company VaRie.
We started the company in 2018. VaRie deals with beads and brass accessories, graphics, soap products, herbs, oils, treatment and more. All our products are handmade. We are based in Nairobi, Roysambu area, although you can also find us online via Facebook page @VaRie Jewelry.
What was your motivation in starting the business?
We felt inspired to start a business because we wanted to be financially independent and capable. Being firstborns in a family of four became a driving force as our other siblings would look up to us for guidance and a role model, we knew we had to make a difference.
Give us a brief description of how these products are made, from start to finishing.
The products are made from simple raw materials; we use beads and brass wire, which are crafted using jewellery tools and pliers. We wear and like different jewellery, so it came naturally to start this business as it resonated with us all while celebrating the African culture.
How much do you make in a good month?
We currently make around Sh15,000, although sales did not start booming immediately. We had to sacrifice a lot of time and effort into making the business sustainable. At the time, we were still in school and we had to make a tough decision to pause schooling for some time in order to start and ground the business.
Have you faced any challenges so far and what are the opportunities related to this business?
When we started, the products were new in the market and it took a long time for it to pick up. As we continued to create a supply-chain, we found our niche by selling to people at wholesale prices where they would then sell them at retail prices. This strategy ensured we had continuous income flow, as the customers were buying in order to resell and make a profit. For example our most affordable product is brass rings, which go for Sh50 per piece.
What is your wholesale price?

We sell at a wholesale price of Sh20 each for 25 pieces and above. This means if you wish to start a business, you can invest in our small business with minimum capital of only Sh500. This means our business has a good profit margin. Currently we are selling over 20 different products, which we developed the skills overtime.
What have you been able to achieve personally as a result of this venture?
We've been able to achieve recognition due to our efforts and ultimately, we have empowered the youth and the community as a whole.
What else do you do other than this business?
This business is our main hustle. In addition, we also recently graduated last year with a degree in Bachelor of Arts-Gender and Development studies, so the future options are open.
