Menengai Oilers keep pace with Kenya Cup big boys after Nakuru Derby victory

Menengai Oilers continued their impressive start to the Kenya Cup season, defeating Nakuru RFC 34-15 in a high-stakes Nakuru Derby at Nakuru Athletics Club.

The emphatic win marked Oilers' fourth consecutive victory, keeping them level on 20 points with perennial powerhouses KCB and defending champions Kabras Sugar at the top of the Kenya Cup standings.

However, Oilers remain third on the log due to an inferior point difference of +199 compared to KCB’s +248 and Kabras Sugar’s +239. Despite this, Oilers’ red-hot form has made them legitimate title contenders as they chase their maiden Kenya Cup glory.

This was Oilers’ fourth win in eight Nakuru Derby meetings, underlining their growing dominance over their arch-rivals. Remarkably, it was also their second consecutive win at Nakuru Athletics Club, a venue where victories have historically been hard to come by for the Oilers.

Speaking after the match, Oilers head coach Gibson Weru attributed the team’s success to their cohesive gameplay and disciplined execution.

“Our focus this season has been on improving our defensive structure and capitalising on scoring opportunities. The players have shown tremendous commitment, and their hard work is paying off. We’re taking it one game at a time, but the dream of Kenya Cup glory is very much alive,” Weru said.

Menengai Oilers have enjoyed a sensational start to the campaign, having already recorded dominant wins over Mwamba (94-9), Strathmore Leos (38-8), and Kisumu RFC (76-13).

The Nakuru Derby triumph further cements their credentials as genuine title challengers in a highly competitive season.

Elsewhere, defending champions Kabras Sugar showcased their class with a 45-5 demolition of Strathmore Leos. Kenya Harlequin also impressed, powering past Impala RFC 48-12 in a one-sided encounter.

Nondescripts maintained their strong form with a 23-3 win over Blak Blad, while Kisumu RFC secured their first victory of the season, defeating South Coast Pirates 38-9 at Mamboleo Stadium in a game that also served as the Obange Cup.

With their stellar form, Menengai Oilers remain in contention for the top spot, but they will need to maintain consistency in the weeks ahead to keep up with heavyweights KCB and Kabras Sugar.

As the season progresses, the battle for Kenya Cup supremacy promises to be an enthralling contest.
