Kenya and Uganda are poised for a thrilling Elgon Cup decider on Saturday from 4pm at Kings Park, Bweyogerere, following last weekend’s nail-biting 27-25 victory by the Simbas at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds.

The Simbas, ranked 32nd globally with 52.55 points, narrowly edged out their 40th-ranked Ugandan rivals in the first leg but showed vulnerability in maintaining possession and discipline in open play.

The team relied heavily on their forward pack, with limited contributions from the backs, a concern head coach Jerome Paarwater is eager to address ahead of the decider.

“We’ve worked on our weak areas, especially ball retention and reducing penalties. Our backs have been sharpened to offer more attacking options,” said Paarwater.

The Elgon Cup, established in 2004, celebrates the historic rivalry between Kenya and Uganda and honours Mount Elgon, a natural landmark straddling the two nations.

Over the years, the competition has grown to include women’s and Under-20 categories, fostering a vibrant rugby culture across East Africa.

For Uganda, today presents a chance to reclaim the title they narrowly missed out on last year, while the Simbas are eyeing their 11th crown to extend their dominance over Uganda's seven titles.

The stakes are heightened by the impact on World Rugby rankings, with both teams looking to improve their standings through a commanding performance.
