Kabras Sugar RFC began the 2024 National Sevens Circuit with a dominant display, capturing the Christie Sevens title at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
In a thrilling final, Kabras edged out Kenya Harlequin 17-12, finishing the tournament unbeaten. As they prepare for the second leg, the Kakamega Ingoo Sevens, head coach Felix Ayange exudes confidence in his squad's ability to maintain their winning form.
"Our performance at the Christie Sevens was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team," said Ayange. "We have the quality, form, and determination to carry this momentum into the Kakamega Sevens. The players are focused and ready to give their best on home turf."
Kabras RFC, the hosts for the Kakamega Ingoo Sevens, enter the tournament as the top seed following their recent triumph.
They have been drawn into Group A alongside MMUST, Blak Blad, and the invited Western Bulls. With the backing of their home fans, Kabras RFC aims to replicate their Christie Sevens success and defend their title at the Kakamega Showgrounds.
In preparation for the tournament, coach Ayange has made strategic additions to his squad, including the Kenya U20 duo of James Olela and Jackson Siketa, who recently won the Rugby Africa Barthes Cup. Patrick Kluivert, a standout player from Strathmore Leos and Catholic Monks, also joins the team. These new inclusions bring fresh energy and skill to an already formidable lineup.
"James and Jackson have shown great promise, and their experience at the U20 level will be invaluable," Ayange noted. "Patrick Kluivert brings additional depth and versatility, which will be crucial as we navigate through the competition."
The core of the Christie Sevens winning squad remains intact, with nine players retained for the Kakamega Sevens. Key players such as Patrick Lumumba, Biden Hayo, Brian Mutua, and Jacktone Osoo will continue to play pivotal roles.
The diminutive Collins Osore, named the Most Valuable Player at the Christie Sevens, along with Eric Cantona, Victor Otieno, and the speedy Griffin Chao, are expected to make significant contributions. Clinton Litali rounds out the 13-man squad.
