Nyanchama outclasses 250 golfers at VetLab

To address the ongoing challenges faced by Kenyan professionals at the Magical Kenya Open (MKO), it is essential to invest in junior golf and support young golfers.

This was the resounding message delivered by speakers at the presentation dinner for the Kabete Ladies Open, held at the VetLab Sports Club over the weekend.

The oversubscribed event attracted a record participation of 250 players, including 14 junior golfers competing for top honors.

"If we are to change the golf narrative in this country, we must be ready to heavily invest in junior golf. We need to encourage more juniors to take up the sport, invest in modern equipment, and provide the necessary coaching," said host lady captain Caroline Muguku.

Among the standout juniors at the event were Belinda Wanjiru, Kanana Muthomi, Hazel Kuria, Yolanda Yu, Nyawira Macharia, and Britney Nyanchera. Kanana finished as the Division A Gross winner with a score of 78 Gross points.

At the recently concluded MKO, junior golfer Harish Shashwat was the top-placed Kenyan, finishing at 4-over after the second round.

During the Kabete Ladies Open, which was played under scorching sun and windy conditions, Mercy Nyanchama shot an impressive 76 Gross points to claim the prestigious title.

Following her success, she expressed her determination as she shifts her focus to the Muthaiga Open, scheduled for March 14-16, 2025.

"I'm happy with every aspect of my game even although I still need some fine-tuning as I prepare for the Muthaiga Open. I aim to achieve a good score there," she said.

Agnes Nyakio narrowly lost to Nyanchama on countback, also scoring 76 Gross points to secure the Division A Gross prize. [Mose Sammy]
