Genga wins inaugural Inter-University Golf Championship

Great drives and a perfect short game came in handy for home player Eric Genga, who won the first edition of the Nomadic Golf Africa - Inter-University Alumni Golf Championship at Vetlab Sports Club layout on Friday.

A commendable field of 140 golfers from 62 universities battled out for the prizes presented by the various sponsors who supported the meet.

Genga was off the deck on the last flight that teed off at 1:10 pm.

Playing off handicap 16, he had a blast on the course, winding up with a whooping 46 stableford points to triumph.

Heaping credited his coach, Isaac Makoha, a top elite golfer, in fixing other aspects of his game that saw him secure the win.

"I'm indebted to my coach, Makoha, who has helped a lot with fixing my swing and polished my game a lot bearing this big win today," said Genga.

Michael Chege, playing off handicap 28, an alumnus of Egerton University, bagged the Men winner prize with a score of 42 stableford points. Erick Kiruja, the Men second prize winner with a compact score of 40 stableford points playing off a handicap 11. Handicap 27, Elish Amadi came in third with a score of 39 stableford points. Taking charge of the Ladies was Lucia Mwaniki, playing off handicap 27, upon returning a score of 36 stableford points. Coming in as the Lady second prize winner was long-hitting Farida Limo, playing off handicap 27, with a score of 34 stableford points ahead of the Lady third prize winner, Faith Njenga, who posted 33 stableford points.

Winning the Best First Nine was Newton Ong'alo with 22 stableford points. The Best Second Nine winner prize went to Benson Kanyi with 21 stableford points.

In the university category, the University of Nairobi was recognized as the Best university, followed by Egerton University, and Moi University taking second and third places respectively.

Outshining the rest of the pack in the Pros category was Mike Kisia, playing off -2, was the Pro winner with a score of 38 stableford points.

Additionally, the Championship's Hidden Hole was won by Steve Wanyee. Handicap four, David Kimani took home the Best Effort prize with a score of 20 stableford points
