IPOA investigates police brutality at Multimedia University

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has begun investigations into police brutality against a Multimedia University student during protests on Tuesday, September 17.

In a press statement, IPOA confirmed they will look into the assault of Trevor Mureithi, who sustained a fracture in his foot. The incident was captured on video.

"IPOA has established the identity of one student who sustained a fracture in his foot," the statement said.

 "The Authority also established that police lobbed a teargas canister in a girls' hostel which exploded and caused fire."

Footage shows five police officers attacking Mureithi, who was already injured and struggling to stand. The video also depicts officers detonating a teargas canister next to him while he was on the ground.

IPOA will further investigate the use of teargas by police, describing it as reckless.

“IPOA reiterates that members of the National Police Service (NPS) should discharge their mandate professionally and responsibly in accordance with Article 244 of the Constitution,” the statement added.

Once investigations are complete, IPOA may recommend actions that could lead to the prosecution of the involved officers.

On Wednesday, Multi-Media University students protested on campus, demanding justice and accountability following the incident.

Transport was disrupted along Magadi Road in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, as students protested against poor sanitation and a lack of water, blaming the administration for not addressing their concerns.
