ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo implemented changes at the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) on Friday by appointing two new members to the board.
In a gazette notice dated June 27, Dr. Musangi Mutua and Ummu Haji Ahmed were selected to join the board chaired by Mary Mungai.
Owalo also revoked the appointments of former Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly speaker Albert Kochei, Sarah Kabira, and Tonia Mutiso.
Dr. Mutua and Ahmed will serve a three-year term effective from June 28, 2024.
Dr. Jane Musangi Mutua, previously chairperson of Masinde Muliro University Council, brings relevant experience to her new role.
The changes coincide with accusations that the government interfered with internet services during protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
CAK's mandate includes regulating broadcasting, cyber security, multimedia, telecommunications, electronic commerce, postal and courier services, with oversight over internet operations in the country.
Owalo clarified that the appointments align with the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as per section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.
