Free Billy Mwangi now, Embu protesters tell State

Embu Town was paralysed on Friday as residents and members of the business community protested the abduction of Billy Mwangi, a 24-year-old man who has been missing for a week.

Carrying placards written “Free Billy” and chanting “No Billy, No Peace,” the demonstrators barricaded roads, set tires ablaze, and forced businesses to shut down as shop owners feared looting.

The protesters marched to Embu Police Station, demanding answers from police about their failure to locate Mwangi.

Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, who joined the demonstrations, criticised the authorities for inaction and issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Mwangi’s release.

“The parents are living in fear, not knowing where their son is, and we cannot remain silent. Who will be targeted next?” Mukunji asked, warning of more protests if there was no progress.

Embu Business Community Secretary-General Mugambi Guyo, expressed solidarity with Mwangi’s family, noting the emotional toll on his loved ones.

“His mother is deeply distressed and has been hospitalised,” said Guyo.

Residents called for Mwangi’s release, stressing the need to protect the right to free speech.

Mwangi was reportedly abducted last week while waiting for a haircut. Witnesses said four hooded men forcibly took him and drove off in a double-cabin vehicle heading toward Nairobi.

The protests come on the back of mounting public frustration over abductions, with citizens demanding accountability from the authorities.
