Several people are feared dead and others were injured after a trailer veered off the Nyamasaria overpass in Kachok, Kisumu County, on Tuesday evening before falling off.
The trailer landed on a tuk-tuk that was below the overpass on its way to Kisumu CBD on Nairobi road, trapping the passengers and the driver.
According to Samuel Odera, a taxi driver who was driving behind the trailer before it veered off, the trailer lost control before landing on the tuk-tuk on the road below.
"It seems the driver lost control because he was trying to take a sharp corner. The flyover has a sharp corner so if you aren't careful, you are likely to cause an accident," Odera said.
Residents who thronged the scene of the accident called on the Kenya National Highway Authority to consider improving the road's structure to avert the loss of lives through accidents.
They noted that the area has become a major black spot.
"The government should do something about this flyover. They may, for example, have to raise its walls so that in the case of an accident, vehicles will not fall over," said one of the residents said.
Kisumu East OCPD Joseph Obiero who led the rescue operation called on residents to vacate the area to allow the rescue team which includes police, medics, and firemen to evacuate those who were still trapped down.
At some point, police were forced to lobby teargas to disperse the crowd, some of whom were caught trying to loot goods that were being ferried by the trailer.
