Samburu Assembly Speaker resigns to take up UN job

Fred Lengees has resigned as the Speaker of Samburu County Assembly.

Mr Lengees tendered his resignation letter today to Governor Lati Lelelit following his appointment as United Nations (UN) Representative to Juba, South Sudan.

The governor who was among local leaders who converged at the county headquarters to bid farewell to the outgoing Speaker, said they will miss his leadership skills and contribution to the development of the region.

"He worked efficiently for eight months at the assembly. His service delivery was excellent, and worked with everyone without bias or tribalism," he said.

Mr Lelelit noted that Lengees work ethics and impressive profile attracted the attention of the UN.

"We believe his position will be of benefit to the people of South Sudan, and that of members of the the Samburu community here," he said.

The outgoing Speaker said for the past eight months, Members of the County Assembly and staff ensured a conducive working environment.

"I thank MCAs, the clerk and the governor for allowing me to take the new role at the UN. It has been a great pleasure working with all of you," he said.

Before joining the assembly last year, Lengees had served the UN for 15 years in different capacities.

Samburu Senator Steve Lelegwe congratulated the outgoing Speaker for his appointment as the UN representative to Juba, South Sudan, and urged him to keep up the good work he had exhibited at the assembly.

"As the people of Samburu and members of the Naiboisho clan, we have released you, and blessed you in your new assignment," Mr Lelengwe said.

Samburu county assembly deputy Speaker Simba Lelenkeju said the vacancy would be filled soon.

"The position of Speaker is now open, and anyone can apply. We have worked with Lengees well without any problems, and we know his new position will help the people of Samburu," said Lelenkeju.
