More than 1,000 residents of West Pokot displaced by devastating landslides and floods have received a Sh10 million donation from the Chinese government.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa on Tuesday delivered the cheque to area governor John Lonyangapuo towards the purchase of construction materials for housing units for the families.
The residents are currently living under squalid conditions in makeshift camps where they were relocated to after last month’s tragic floods that killed more than 50 people.
The families are sheltering in Nyarkulian, Paroo and Parua camps. Mr Wamalwa said the government would start erecting the new houses for the affected households from January.
“This is a Christmas gift from the Chinese government,” he added.
