University of Nairobi to scrap more than 40 offered courses

In line with the Ministry of Education reform call on Institutions of Higher learning in the country, the University of Nairobi (UoN) has plans to scrap at least 40 courses which have for over five years failed to attract students.

The university senate has ratified the proposal to scrap the courses which cut across certificates, diploma, bachelors, masters and PhD citing quality and duplication of the programmes.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha had given universities two weeks to make tough decisions on staff and programmes rationalization.

Still on UoN, the University is planning to set up a smart classroom to support creative teaching and learning in Africa.

Through the help of the Create-View Company from China, the University’s Open Distance and eLearning (ODEL) Campus will establish a Digital Centre of education aimed at enhancing delivery and access to quality education.

The MoU establishing the pact was signed by a delegation from Guangzhou Create-View Data Information Company and Prof Peter Mbithi, the UoN vice chancellor.
