Police allowed to detain suspect found using phone of dead man

A Makadara court has granted detectives three days to hold a suspect in connection with the death of a man.

The detectives from Starehe Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested Harrison Onkonji Mung’oni after he was found using the phone of the deceased, Godfrey Ngunjiri Njambari.

 Ngunjiri went missing but he was later found dead.

On Wednesday, an officer investigating the matter told Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate Angelo Kithinji that the deceased was reported as missing on March 13.

The middle-aged man's disappearance had been booked at Gigiri police station and days later his body was found lying at Kenyatta National Hospital Mortuary.

In a sworn affidavit, the officer said the deceased brother who had hosted him at his house in Huruma returned home and found him missing and reported the matter to police since he was new in Nairobi.

The case was transferred to DCI Starehe from Gigiri two weeks after it was established that the deceased was found murdered at Kariobangi round about fly over within Starehe Sub-County.

Forensic investigations lead to the arrest of suspected woman who was found in possession of deceased’s mobile phone.

The investigating officer told the court that further probe linked Mung’oni as the first person who picked the handset from the deceased’s pocket.

The affidavits reads in part “In the meantime investigations into the circumstances and facts surrounding the murder of the deceased  and involvement or otherwise of the suspects are incomplete as several suspects are yet to be traced and arrested with the help of suspect.”

Adding “We need to record statements of potential witnesses, taking the suspect for mental assessment and forwarding the file to the directorate of public prosecution for perusal and legal advice.”

The matter shall be mentioned on 3rd June.
