IG hopeful gets nod from joint MPs team

A joint parliamentary committee has unanimously approved the nomination of Hillary Mutyambai as the Inspector General of Police.

In its report, the National Assembly and Senate Committee on Security noted that Mr Mutyambai had passed the integrity test based on a clearance report from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

All eyes will today be on MPs from both Houses, who will debate the report in their separate chambers and are widely expected to approve President Uhuru Kenyatta’s choice of head of police.

“The committee recommends that Parliament approves the nomination and subsequent appointment of Mutyambai to the position of IG,” said Senator Johnstone Sakaja.

Mr Sakaja said despite inviting members of the public to present dissenting views on the suitability of Mutyambai, the committee had not received any complaints.

In seconding the Motion, Nominated Senator Judy Pareno congratulated the President for nominating Mutyambai, saying the nominee met all the qualifications in law, including leadership and integrity, for public appointment.

The committee's 25-page report observed that Mutyambai had the required professional training and experience.

“The nominee demonstrated vast experience in intelligence, policing, security and investigation with 27 years of investigative and law enforcement experience,” read the report.

Mutyambai's stellar credentials saw the MPs focus mainly on what they expected him to achieve when he assumes office.
