Kenyatta University has implemented a directive issued by the Ministry of Education a year ago.
The institution's vice chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina has said that they have shut down two campuses located in Arusha, Tanzania, and Kigali, Rwanda, as advised by the then Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i.
The institution together with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology was ordered to close down their diaspora branches after being blocked from admitting students on grounds that they did not meet the required quality standards set by the higher education commissions of the two countries.
Dr Matiangi had advised the two universities to consolidate and utilize their resources in established campuses in Kenya.
