When Nivea Debra,21,participated in her first ever beauty pageantry competition, a year ago, she felt as if her world had crumbled after emerging fourth at Maseno University’s modelling competition.
Initially, she thought beauty was only in the looks only to realise many other challenges were ahead that needed to be faced wisely with an effort.
"I had never thought of being declared a star after participating in various contests. Things were different. I had to continue working extra hard by participating in various competitions to get the best, “she says.
Debra has always been enthusiastic for opportunities, especially with her support to the society and conservation of environment
"I heard of auditions for Miss Environment Kenya and was hesitant to participate but after getting advice and encouragement from my designer and a few friends, I decided to audition.
Surprisingly, I emerged the winner and was crowned Miss Environment Kenya, Kisumu County, “Debra says.
This latest title, Miss Environment Kenya has seen her visit various counties in the country and conducted projects towards conserving the environment.
Nivea works on major projects which aims at planting trees, installation of dustbins and street cleanups which are accompanied by mentorship by environmental experts within the counties she`s visiting.
She has also participated in Jungle festival, an event carried out in nature with the theme of “save the jungle”. Save the jungle advocates for environmental conservation and solid waste management.
"We aim at preserving Nairobi’s source of water by planting at least 1000 tree seedlings in its major water catchment area to curb the issue of water shortage and electric power rationing, “she says.
Debra is proud of the late Wangari Maathai’s efforts to fight for the conservation of environment as her Mentor and the current Miss Kenya Everly Njambi’s steps of stardom.
