Over 60,000 people to be rendered jobless as from August 28, 2017

Over 60,00 people will be rendered jobless six moths from now. This will definitely increase the percentage of the jobless people in Kenya by 2.9 percent.

This follows a move by the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Prof Judy Wakhungu, of gazetting a notice that will see the ban plastic bag use.

Apparently, this will see over 176 companies close down in six months time, when the ban will be effected as from August 28, 2017.

A good number of people who work with these companies have pleaded with the government to lift the ban saying that they will be greatly affected.

“ We have families to take care of and if the Government insist that it want to ban the manufacturing of plastic bags,they are simply telling us to resort to dubious means of making our ends meet,’” said one of the employees of these companies.

According to them, the Government should look for other alternative ways of dealing with the menace of plastic bags wastes.

The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Chief Executive Phylis Wakiaga said that the company owners were not consulted before the decision was made.

Additionally, Mr wakianga has asked the Government to come up with an alternative to the plastic bags.He further said that the six-month period given to them is not enough considering that they need to clear their old stock.

On the other hand, some people have lauded the move saying that it will help in keeping the environment clean.
