President Uhuru Kenyatta has proposed to the Salaries and Remunerations Commission headed by Sarah Serem to reduce the salaries given to elected leaders.
Addressing parliament and Kenyans on Wednesday the president said that there is need to cut on salaries received by himself, his deputy, governors, senators, MPs and members of the county assemblies.
According to him, this huge salaries earned by elected leaders and some civil servants put a very heavy burden on the tax payers whereas it just benefits a very small percentage of Kenyan leaving the other lot suffering.
This proposed move by the president is so important because it will help us grow our economy.
The huge salaries given to our leaders widens the gap between the poor and the rich.Which is not good for a developing nation like Kenya.
For the common mwananchi, you find that the essential commodities like sugar, floor, rent are hiked yet these people get a meager pay or some even don’t have salaries to take home.
The hefty salaries cause unemployment in our country in the sense that the youths cannot be employed because already the Government is overloaded by paying salaries of these leaders.
For example, we have 2,222 MCAs who earn an average of Sh300 thousand per month,349 MPs who earn a basic salary of about Sh740,920 each per month. When allowances are added, their pay rises slightly aboveSh1 million every month.
Talk of the 67 senators who also take home a salary of 740,927 per month plus allowances. The 47 county bosses take home a basic salary of Sh1.11 million per month.
On the other hand, the cabinet secretaries earn Sh 1.12 million each per month. The speaker of the National Assembly takes home a salary of Sh 1.4 million while his senate counterpart bags Sh 1.375 million per month.
The President earns Sh 1.75 million while his deputy earns KSh 1.488 million per month.
This move will probably reduce the inflation rate in Kenya. It will also reduce the urge of those seeking elective posts in the country.
