Kenya Utalii College is
marking its 41st graduation ceremony since it was founded.
KUC came into existence
to serve a special interest of providing essential skilled manpower for the
young hospitality and tourism industry.
Utalii College helped in
the 'Kenyanisation' of the industry, which was then dominated by the white man.
In those early days of independence, hospitality and tourism trade was a noble
undertaking and so a preserve of the whites.
Blacks were not
qualified to enroll, making the trade an exclusive club. More than four decades
of KUC training, that myth has been watered down.
Graduates have not only
excelled but outperformed their foreign counterparts, becoming hot cakes both
locally and internationally.
This year's graduation
gives the country a reason to celebrate. We have conquered the world with
refined hospitality brewed at KUC. Days of white dominance are long gone.
As we shine in the glory
of KUC graduands, we must spare a moment for the prestigious hotel school,
which has been described as Kenya's best kept secret for the many challenges
facing it.
