High school students have become errant in the recent past due to exposure to heavy violent content. Students have turned to sexual promiscuity, arson attacks, drug and substance abuse, prostitution among other social vices. Of late more than 70 schools have been burnt. The 21st century schools have exposed students to aggressive media content without realizing the dangers associated with such. Iteirio School in Kisii was recently burnt on the basis that the students were not allowed to watch a football match on weekend. This is the least expected in this generation. How can students torch down seven multimillion dormitories just because of a football match?
Schools are no longer institutions of learning and discipline but simply entertainment institutions. Most of the families where these students belong cannot even afford a television set. Do these students torch down their houses if they do not access entertainment? Simply no! But the environment at school has stimulated their psychology such that they cannot do without music, watching football, swimming, dancing and the like.
Imagine of a school in wajir, Turkana or Samburu counties where the only class that the students know is a mud walled grades thatched structure or simply under a tree. Can such students turn out to be hostile? Such students are never exposed to watching football matches or dancing crews during 'jam sessions'. How then can they burn their schools? Why is the burning of schools prone in Nairobi, Kisii, Malindi, Kiambu and such well-endowed counties? In such schools parents pay more than Kshs60, 000 a year in order for the students to have access to entertainment and eat good junk food. Why should students be informed when 10 schools in their county have been burnt? What will hinder them to burn theirs as well?
They will burn since it's the trend. Ng'enda secondary school in Gatundu was burnt just because Muhoho High School which is the biggest school in Gatundu was also burnt. Drug abuse is very rampant in high schools because of the student's exposure to such activities through music and movies. Majority of high school students are fans of music such as reggae, hip hop, rock, and riddimmz whose main content is sex, drug abuse, homosexuality, prostitution and other social vices. Due to continued exposure to such, students have resulted to experimentation of such. Students now smoke bang and other hard drugs just because they saw a celebrity does so.
Young girls in Kisumu practice prostitution for as low as Kshs 10. Homosexuality and Lesbianism is very common in high schools, all because of exposure to aggressive media content. Rogue entertainment such as watching movies and jam sessions and night dances should be withdrawn from schools in order to secure our students from ill vices due to such exposure. Students should also be limited from information regarding war, violence and hate. By doing so we shall be in the process of clearing off the stuff our students have been fed with over time.
