The Government's plan to roll out a programme to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics for lower primary school pupils from March is welcome.
Following the announcement of the programme, Grace Obonyo, a primary school teacher, had argued that although it was good, the Government should have focused on languages, especially English, which is the main language of instruction.
The Government recognises that literacy skills are crucial in delivery of quality, modern education.
That is why it launched a programme dubbed Tusome Literacy Programme with a view of improving the teaching and learning of English and Kiswahili for 5.4 million children in Standard One and Two so that they secure the ability to read and write by the time they join Standard Three.
The programme aims at improving teacher capacity for effective delivery of classroom instruction, improve access to appropriate textbooks and supplementary materials in literacy, enhance instructional support and supervision of teachers through Teacher Advisory Centres, tutors and head teachers among others.
Ms Obonyo should not panic. The Government has already taken her fears into account.
