It is interesting how a club that was once on top of the Kenya premier league at the start of the season is now slumbering way below the league. AFC Leopards was the talk of the town, thrashing teams left right, and center and was foreseen to be the main contenders for the 2016 Kenya Premier League title.

However, few months down the season, the once football giants and second most supported club in the country is now the laughing stock. They have gone their last five games in all competition without a win and are now below Gor Mahia in the standing table. It should be remembered that Gor Mahia was at the bottom of the table when AFC Leopards were leading at the start of the season. Apart from this, the club has been thrashed out of the top 8 tournament while its coach is threatening to quit because of frustrations.

Gor Mahia, its rivals who were languishing at the bottom of the league at the beginning of the season have rejuvenated themselves and are now contending for the top spot. Gor Mahia fans have the passion for their club; they stand with it in unity at all times. When the team was performing dismally, the fans could not sit down and watch as their club suffers shame. They stood their ground and demanded change. Despite their challenges, Gor Mahia fans stand in unity on any matter regarding their club, and will demand the coach to be fired when necessary. The fans will stand with their team during tough financial times such as through establishing a pay bill number and supporting the players and the whole squad.

AFC Leopards fans, on the other hand, have not displayed their passion for the club. The fans are only seen during the good times and will have their tails under their legs when the club is undergoing tough times. These fans will be watching as the corrupt officials in the club mishandle the club’s cash and will not go to the streets to protest against it, in contradiction to the Gor Mahia fans. The AFC Leopards fans tend to entertain their corrupt officials even as they fight for power positions and they watch as their esteemed club heads to a fail.

The official’s in AFC Leopards calls for players to sabotage the coach to satisfy their interests yet AFC Leopards fans do not take any action. These officials go to the bank and withdraw cash belonging to the club for their selfish gains yet the fans are doing nothing about it. They cheer their so-called officials because of being bribed with petty cash and cheap liquor.

AFC Leopards fans should stop being cowards and stand to fight for their club. They should rise and make sure no more individual takes them for a ride and make sure the once giant club returns to its former glory.
