I wish to commend Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and his Transport counterpart James Macharia for bringing professionalism into their respective ministries.
Frankly, I don’t know what Dr Matiang’i was doing in Communication ministry where he appeared to be fighting stakeholders left and right.
In order for Cabinet secretaries to leave a long lasting impression, they must work closely with Government agencies, parastatals and institutions under their respective ministries. The retrogressive practice of ministers filling up parastatals with their cronies for short-term personal gains should not be entertained by the Executive.
The CSs must demand the agencies under their dockets act professionally and competently. Those that fail to make a difference in the lives of Kenyans should be wound up.
The CSs must seek explanation on poor performance by public schools in national exams, short lifespan of major roads built by cowboy contractors among other critical areas.
The Government agencies must craft their programmes and strategies, with the input of reporting ministries, to avoid duplication of efforts.
