Public secondary school principals and boards of management have been urged to implement fees guidelines issued by former Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi.
Speaking yesterday during an awareness programme in Kisumu, Elimu Yetu Coalition Campaigns Officer Catherine Asego said schools were under an obligation to adhere to the new guidelines.
She urged parents and education stakeholders to ensure school heads implement the fees guidelines in January.
“Some parents might not be aware that there were fee guidelines issued by the Government this year. I must appeal to you to liaise with your school heads and the boards of management to ensure these guidelines are reflected in the fees structures given by the schools going forward,” she said.

Ms Asego asked stakeholders to create awareness on issues affecting education in the country.
“We shall continue creating awareness so that no school charges more money than is stipulated,” she said.
The fees guidelines which were gazetted in March, 2015, indicated that Sh9,374, Sh53,542 and Sh37,210 be charged annually in day secondary, boarding and special needs public schools respectively.
While giving the guidelines, the former Education CS said his ministry did not categorise public schools as national, county, sub- and extra-county schools.
Kaimenyi banned motivation fees for teachers, education improvement levies and county education charges. He even asked school heads to refund parents who had paid fees in excess, including such charges.
The former Education CS also directed the fees be spread across the three terms in the ratio of 50:30:20.
