Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma has put corrupt officials on notice, saying no one would be allowed to derail efforts to develop the lakeside city.
While addressing the public during the Madaraka Day celebrations, Ranguma said he was not ready to accomodate corrupt individuals in his government.
“I want to warn county officials with a questionable interest in the county government contracts that their days are numbered,” said the Governor.
The Governor, who was not specific on his notice, said the county government is considering inviting the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission to investigate instances where complaints have been raised.
IMPEACHMENT THREATS
He cited the procurement of development projects within the county as the most affected, adding that he has information on officials within his government who were “selling tenders in bars”.
The sentiments come in the wake of calls for his impeachment by a group calling itself the Kisumu Leaders Caucus.
The group, which includes the civil society, university lecturers and students, youth leaders and a section of MCAs have accused the governor of tolerating corruption and nepotism in his government.
Ranguma, who seemed to be responding to the impeachment threats, said he is ready to deal with anybody tainting the image of his government through corruption.
SELLING CONTRACTS
“When we get proof that you are doing dirty deals, we will not only relieve you of your duties, but also seek legal action against you,” said Ranguma.
He said the issuance of county tenders and contracts must be done in a transparent and credible manner.
“It is against the Constitution for any official to collude with certain individuals to sell the contracts. This is what leads to contractors doing shoddy work,” added Ranguma.
The Governor also challenged the MCAs to move fast and pass development Bills, to facilitate faster development in the county.
He said faster legislation would also reduce opportunities for corruption.
