EACC to probe medical cover tender irregularities at KMA, MTRH

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has commenced investigations into an alleged medical tender irregularity.

This was after a whistleblower raised concern over a multi-million tender irregularity involving medical insurance, Life Assurance, and General Insurance coverage for Kenya Maritime Authority staff and Board members.

In a letter from EACC's regional office in Mombasa, to KMA Director General, several officers have been summoned by the anti-graft body to record statements.

The interviews began on Tuesday, November 5 and have been scheduled to end on Monday, November 11.

In another case, the EACC had been urged to launch a probe into the alleged Sh300 million tender irregularity for medical insurance for the staff at Moi Teaching and Referal Hospital (MTRH). This was done via a whistleblower.

As per the whistleblower's account, the handling of the tender raises concerns about transparency and integrity, suggesting potential malpractices by senior managers.

According to an outcome of a petition before the Public Procurement Review Board, procedural errors by MTRH risk the facility losing procurement rights.

It emerged that the lowest bidder in the tender was poised to secure the contract despite a revised financial bid. It is also alleged that MTRH has been frustrating the award of tender while endangering the lives of its staff.

The institutions are yet to issue an official statement on the said malpractices.
