Doctors strike ends. [File, Standard]

The nationwide doctors’ strike has ended after 56 days.

According to a tweet by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday, the two parties reached a consensus after signing an agreement with the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union.

Earlier on, the two parties had reached a stalemate, when they agreed on all issues raised by the doctors except the internship of medical interns.

The court had ordered the state officers and the doctors’ union to reach a return-to-work formula by Wednesday.

The medics reiterated that they will only resume duty if their short-term demands are addressed.

The short-term demands include posting of intern doctors, payment of basic salary arrears, harmonisation of the salary scale of doctors and provision of medical cover.
