Leaders mourn veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela

President William Ruto has joined Kenyans in mourning the passing of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela.

Taking to social media, the president expressed his heartfelt condolences to the late journalist’s family, honouring his immense contribution to Kenyan media.

"We are heartbroken by the death of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela. He was a gifted and powerful broadcaster whose alluring voice dominated our airwaves with his first-class football commentaries and the signature programme Je Huu Ni Ungwana?" Ruto wrote on X.

The Head of State further praised Mbotela for mentoring young broadcasters and shaping Kenya’s media industry.

Mbotela, who had been ailing, passed away on the morning of February 7, shortly after 9:30 AM. His daughter-in-law, Anne Mbotela, confirmed his passing to the press.

The veteran journalist was best known for his iconic show Je Huu Ni Ungwana?, a household name on Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) Radio and TV for decades.

His distinctive voice and storytelling prowess made him a legend in sports commentary and national broadcasting.

Mbotela leaves behind his wife, Alice Mwikali, and their three children: George, Aida, and Jimmy Mbotela.

His passing marks the end of an era in Kenyan journalism, with tributes pouring in from across the nation.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)  mourned the death of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela.

The party described Mbotela as a great man, a brave journalist and a leader.

ODM said Mbotela has left a permanent mark in the history of the country and that he will be dearly missed.

The Orange party said his articulation of issues was unmatched and will forever live in the minds and hearts of many Kenyans.

“We join the rest of the Nation in mourning the passing on of veteran politician Leonard Mambo Mbotela this morning after a short illness. Mbotela’s rich legacy in the media industry spans for years. His articulation of issues and educative programs like Jee Huu Ni Uungwana and Swahili programs on KBC radio ya Taifa will forever be etched in the memory of Kenyans," ODM said.
