Faki praises credible elections in Botswana

African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki has praised Botswana for its peaceful and transparent general elections held on 30 October 2024.

In a statement dated November 1, Faki noted that Botswana has remained a leading democracy in Africa, demonstrating effective governance through regular elections since its independence in September 1966.

He congratulated the newly elected President Duma Boko, leader of the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition, on his election.

Faki also commended former President Mokgweetsi Masisi for ensuring a smooth power transition by conceding defeat before the official results were released.

He acknowledged the contributions of all Batswana and stakeholders to the elections, stating, “Their strong belief in democracy is commendable.”

At the same time, Faki expressed gratitude to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his role in leading the AU Election Observation Mission to Botswana.

He reaffirmed the AU's commitment to promoting constitutional democracy and inclusive governance as part of Agenda 2063.
