Faki calls for ceasefire in Sudan crisis

The African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki has expressed concern over the worsening security and humanitarian situation in Sudan, particularly in El Fasher, Darfur.

Faki condemned the escalation of violence in the region, calling for an immediate end to the fighting in and around El Fasher.

 He reiterated the AU’s stance that military action will not solve Sudan's crisis, warning that the continued conflict only worsens the suffering of the Sudanese people, especially after decades of instability and forced displacement.

“The fighting prolongs the devastation in Sudan, including Darfur, after years of conflict,” said Faki.

The Commission Chairperson urged both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), alongside their allies, to adopt a permanent ceasefire.

 According to Faki, this would create an environment conducive to an inclusive political dialogue, addressing the root causes of the conflict and restoring Sudan’s constitutional order and stability.

He also called on the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) to urgently assess the situation.

Faki welcomed the planned meeting of the AU PSC Presidential Committee of Five, led by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, aimed at resolving the Sudanese conflict.

“As the United Nations General Assembly meets in New York, collective international action is vital to resolve this dangerous crisis,” he added.
