Things that can make you miserable when travelling

Travelling is linked to fun, leisure and rejuvenation. However, it can be stressful. Here are some of the mistakes that may contribute to such a situation.

Hunger: Nutrition experts say that when you are travelling on an empty stomach, the probability of the traveller getting angry is high. Sometimes while travelling, it becomes difficult to keep to the meal schedule.

What to do: Do not indulge in big, unhealthy meals while travelling. Instead stick to regular small and healthy meals throughout the journey. If this is not possible, keep some snacks handy and eat them when the hunger pangs bite. If you are travelling by air or rail, check for the snags allowed aboard. If by road, take advantage of the stopovers to buy some.

Uncomfortable clothes and shoes: Your outfit can have an impact on your general mood. Certain colours are associated with certain moods - from lowering your anxiety to giving you energy.

What to do: Dress in comfortable outfits - moisture-wicking fabrics that allow you to move around with ease.

Sleep deprivation: Long road trips, jet (train) lag, unfamiliar destinations, hotel rooms, and a busy schedule can lead to sleep deprivation. Experts say a lack of quality sleep can cause cravings for unhealthy food that contribute to "angry" feelings, irritability, anxiety, and even memory loss.

What to do: To avoid sleep deprivation while travelling; switch to local time as soon as possible, avoid lots of caffeine and alcohol, get as much exposure to sunlight as possible during the day, stay hydrated, wear a light-blocking eye mask and earplugs to help you sleep and exercise.

Poor planning: Spontaneous spending on money, and time, without a budget, can lead to anxiety and stress. The same goes for time. If you are always in a rush to catch the taxi, bus, train, or plane, you will most likely have a stressful trip.

What to do: Make sure you have in place a plan with important details such as accommodation money and transportation.
