National campaign on swine flu is necessary

Since the Minister for Public Health Beth Mugo confirmed that a case of swine flu infection was detected in Kisumu on Monday, Kenyans are living in fear.

And though research shows the disease is manageable, the Government should embark on awareness campaigns to avoid spread. It should help citizens learn more about the disease through civic education workshops.

Here are some tips on prevention of the H1N1 virus:

Contrary to many people’s belief, research shows there is no relationship between swine flu and pigs. Pigs are not even vectors of this disease. Kenyans should not, therefore, shun pork.

Maintain personal and environmental hygiene and use disposable tissues when sneezing or coughing.

Wash hands regularly and public amenities should have proper ventilation. Don’t touch open body organs such as eyes, noses and mouth with contaminated hands. Avoid non-prescribed over-the-counter drugs in cases of feverish symptoms.

Instead, seek a doctor’s advice. The good news is that swine flu is not deadly and if reported in time, it is manageable.
