Music and Politics in Africa

Artsistes have been known to champion for rights through their music. In Africa, artistes who have used their influence to champion for change in policies have faced opposition from their Government.

The following are some of the artistes in Africa who have experienced such opposition from their government.

Bobi Wine – Uganda

Ugandan-artiste- turned politician Bobi Wine, was allegedly tortured and assaulted by the government for accusations of treason. He currently is in the United states on treatment.

Fela Kuti - Nigeria

His songs centered on championing for truth and power attacking the country’s military regime.  He was arrested two hundred times by the Government led by Buhari on his first regime.

Fumba Chama - Zambia

The Zambian artist fled to South Africa  after having received threats from his president  Edgar Lungu for his song  “Koswen Mumpoto”. He has been forced into exile numerous times before and even been jailed for his participation inprotests.

Nay wa Mitego -Tanzania

The Tanzanian  rapper was arrested for allegedly  mocking the government in his song “Wapo” which questioned by the freedom of speech in the country. He was however released a day after his arrest.
