Dairy farmers from Makueni and Kajiado cushioned from milk losses by cooperative entity

19th February, 2021

Dairy farmers from Kibwezi West in Makueni County and those from Kajiado East sub-counties of Mashuru, and Ishara have been rescued from perennial milk losses after Emali Children’s dedicated Agency helped them form a cooperative society, provided refrigerated vehicles for milk transportation to a coolant and linked them with buyers. Speaking to KTN news, the farmers explained how they had been getting losses due to lack of transport of their products, lack of market since they were only selling to hotel owners, schools something that had made dairy farming impossible.

Brokers had for years exploited them buying milk as low as sh. 16 but now through the cooperative, they are selling every kilogram at sh. 39 whereby they get paid sh. 36 and sh. 3 goes to savings. Phineas Gikunda is the Emali Dedicated children’s agency manager in charger of the program and he says that they have been able to bridge the gap in terms of post-harvest losses and cushioned family livelihoods.

However, those farmers from the Kajiado side complained of poor road networks something that hinders milk transportation when the rain pours. At the coolants both located at Sultan Hamud and Masimba markets, towns at the border between Makueni and Kajiado Counties, the management assured that they ensure milk quality and quantity is maintained before getting supplied to a sole source.
