North Rift maize farmers protest over National Cereals and Produce Board depots
24th November, 2014
Maize farmers in the North Rift mount pressure on the government to open the National Cereals and Produce Board depots to stabilize prices in the market.
The prices have dropped to 1,300 shillings per 90kg bag of maize, and the farmers now want the NCPB’S intervention to set what they call a fair price. According to farmers, middlemen in the market have driven prices to the low levels only to fetch higher prices when they eventually sell the maize. Heavy rains in the region also threaten to expose farmers to post harvest losses if the cereals board does not open its stores to take in the harvest.
