Water Cabinet Secretary launches Galana-Kulalu Irrigation project
3rd April, 2016
The Galana/Kulalu food security project has entered yet another crucial stage, this time the planting of maize on the entire 10,000 model farm after two test crops on 500 acres each. Water and irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa launched the planting yesterday and announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the farm in July this year has now been confirmed. In the first test crop, thirteen maize varieties were planted with the highest yielding 39 bags per acre and the worst one yielding 10 bags per acre. The agriculture committee of the national assembly had raised doubts over the viability of the project but later gave it a clean bill of health after certain costly components like milling were removed.
