Mavoko community association fear for another land grabbing by private developers

9th February, 2016

Controversy surrounding a 2000 acre piece of land in Mavoko area of Athi River that had been leased to East Africa Portland cement for mining of limestone is growing with some of the area residents fearing that the land might be given out to another private developer. According to Mavoko community association, preference was to be given to them after the expiry of the Portland contract but delays in processing papers have made them wait for over five years now. They are now appealing to the government through the ministry of lands to intervene and solve the issue. The land has been lying idle since the year 2010.
