17th March, 2015
Over 90,000 residents of Kieni constituency in Nyeri County are facing starvation. Kieni which is the largest constituency in Nyeri County is on the leeward side of Mount Kenya and is often hit by famine. The residents are hard hit and currently some require relief food to mitigate the situation. Kieni legislator Kanini Kega was in the area to provide part of the relief food that is to be issued in different parts of the vast county which is classified by the national drought management authority as a semi-arid area. Kieni is sandwiched between mt. Kenya and Aberdare and many feel that with the right measures, the water from these water towers could be used for irrigation. Rivers are partially dried up, further aggravating the drought situation.
